Until recently, the Isle of Man College and the Open University offered the only possibilities for study beyond A-Level for Manx residents without having to leave the Island.
The College has offered Higher National full-time and part-time programmes for most sectors of the Manx economy since the 1970s. In the UK the recent increase in HE participation was encouraged by the Westminster Government to raise the skills levels in the workforce and underpin the UK’s future role in a value-added global economy.
This has led to many Higher National courses being replaced by full and foundation degree programmes at UK universities.
The College has followed this trend to create the best possible range of opportunities for Island residents and to provide the higher-level skills infrastructure required for the Manx economy in the future.
Degree programmes have been developed in partnership with UK universities - in particular with University of Chester and Liverpool John Moores University - to support the development of higher level skills in a number of areas.
Currently, the Isle of Man College has more than 100 students enrolled on full-time HND and Honours Degree courses in Engineering, Construction, Art and Design, Computing, Public Health, History, Heritage Management, Manx Studies and Teacher Training.
Most recently the College also had validated the Work Based and Integrative Studies Framework, which will allow College to develop a range of vocationally tailored full and foundation degrees to employers across the Island.
As most of the degree programmes are in their early stages the numbers of both full and part-time students are expected to continue to grow with new vocational degrees expected to prove particularly popular with students and employers.
Additional higher education courses will be developed to improve the high-level skills-base of the Manx workforce wherever employers require such skills and where the College is able to deliver such programmes efficiently and effectively.
Currently the College is exploring the possible development of Higher Education programmes to support telecommunications, public administration, social work and tourism.
Each year, approximately 1,100 undergraduate and 120 post graduate students are supported by the Department to further their studies at Higher Education establishments in the United Kingdom, while a further 250 are supported on Further & Higher Education courses at the Isle of Man College and International Business School on the Island. The annual budget for Further & Higher Education courses, both in the UK and on Island, is £12 million, (£1.7m in maintenance grants and £10.3m in tuition fees).
Currently, it is the policy of the Department to support such students by payment of all annual tuition fees. In addition, a means tested maintenance grant is also available, subject to the parental or contributor’s income.

Higher Education opportunities on Island with the Department of Health (DoH)
The Isle of Man Government provides Higher Education programmes for DoH employees. However, individuals who are not employees of the DoH may be able to register on these programmes, too, provided they meet the entry criteria and any funding requirements.
Currently there are four Higher Education programmes being delivered with Keyll Darree, the DoH Education and Training Centre at Noble's Hospital, Strang.
Two of these programmes progress to achieving a degree through the University of Chester and becoming a registered nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
These are the
• BSc (Hons) Nursing - Adult
• BSc (Hons) Nursing - Mental Health

BSc (Hons) Health Studies
The BSc (Hons) Health Studies is specifically designed to assist in applying academic study to your field of health or social care. The mode of delivery is part-time. 
Progression requires the completion of three electives and two core units, usually over a three to four-year period. You can register with Manchester Metropolitan University through Keyll Darree for the full Degree programme.
On successful completion of the programme you will be awarded the BSc (Hons) Health Studies validated by Manchester Metropolitan University.
Alternatively, students can select units from the elective menu, as a development activity. Work-based projects can be fitted into a negotiated unit. This enables you to get the academic credits for the work undertaken relating to your employment.

BSc (Hons) Community Health Studies
The BSc (Hons) Community Health Studies enables community-based practitioners to develop their academic study specifically relating to their practice.
Applicants are welcome from a diverse range of community-based health care practitioners. This programme is validated by the University of Chester. Specific clusters of units are available for differing professional backgrounds. All study is focused on your role and practice on Island.

Keyll Darree also offers Study Skills and Research Awareness workshops as starter activities to support those who are entering academic study or would like to improve their skill level. All students are supported through membership to Keyll Darree Library.
